Discover the first world CD recording of the Concerto in the Hungarian Style, on which Liszt started work shortly before his death at the request of his beautiful student, the great pianist Sophie Menter, completed posthumously by Tchaikovsky: one muse – two composers! The CD also features the celebrated Hungarian Fantasy and Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy as scored by Liszt for piano and orchestra.
My collaboration in 1982 with the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy, truly a giant among conductors, was an extraordinary experience. At our first rehearsal – at his home, on his piano – the legendary Hungarian-born American conductor recalled how, when he was a child in Budapest, he used to intone the principal theme of the Concerto in the Hungarian style. A year after this recording dedicated to Liszt we played to an audience of 10.000 the Third Rachmaninov Concerto, which the Maestro had recorded with Rachmaninov himself at the piano and the Philadelphia Orchestra, which had been the Russian composer’s own favourite. As well as tremendous bravura, Katsaris has brilliance and delicacy in this music, and Ormandy is in his element too. Katsaris’s virtuosity is not only jaw-dropping but also sensitive and nuanced. It’s hard to imagine this music being better served, or played with more panache.

On [retrouve] Cyprien Katsaris dans la Fantaisie Hongroise, face au piano Mark Allen qu’il utilisait autrefois, pour un numéro de pyrotechnie sonore comme on n’en avait pas entendu depuis Cherkassky ou Cziffra. Autre parangon de virtuosité, la Wanderer-Fantaisie est bien plus fouillée que les interprétations souvent superficielles qu’on a connues depuis, et vaut autant pour la présence d’Ormandy (l’une de ses dernières apparitions au disque) que pour l’enthousiasme qu’elle communique.

Cyprien Katsaris outre le fait d’être l’un des tous grands pianistes actuels, est également une personnalité tout à fait attachante. Ce musicien, demandé par les plus grands, de Bernstein à Ormandy en passant par Rattle, Harnoncourt, Dorati ou Dohnanyi, impressionne toujours tant par ses possibilités pianistiques hors du commun que par ses choix de répertoire. Ainsi, lorsqu’il enregistre Liszt avec Ormandy et le Philadelphia Orchestra en 1982, ce n’est pas aux sempiternels concertos qu’il s’attaque, mais à la rare transcription de la Wanderer-Fantaisie ainsi qu’à une première mondiale à l’époque : le Concerto dans le style hongrois écrit par Liszt pour son élève Sophie Menter et orchestré par Tchaïkovsky ! Sous ses doigts, la musique de Liszt semble comme réinventée, improvisée. Le caractère magyar dans le fameux Concerto, mais également dans la plus célèbre Fantaisie hongroise, est plus que maîtrisé : il est transcendé sous des doigts qui ne reculent devant aucune difficulté. Katsaris rajoute ici et là quelques appogiatures, quelques acrobaties que Liszt n’a pas écrites mais dont on n’imagine pas qu’il ne les eut pas approuvées tant elles s’intègrent parfaitement au discours et surtout au style du Maître de Weimar. Jamais cette Fantaisie hongroise n’aura été plus jubilatoire. Katsaris, auteur lui-même d’un certain nombre d’opus […] se pose ici comme tenant d’une tradition directement issue du XIXème et du début du XXème siècle : celles des pianistes compositeurs, dans la lignée de Liszt (bien sûr), mais aussi Godowsky, Busoni ou Sauer.
